"The Final Battles of Beowulf and Roland"

The Epic poems Beowulf and The Song of Roland can be compared in many ways. They were written in adjacent centuries and both were of the noble class of their times. Beowulf is in his seventies while Roland is in his prime when they fight their fatal battles. Although they were written in different centuries there are many parallels that can be drawn showing that each was "the master of their fate and the captain of their souls."
In both epics the heroic character is either a victim of his fate and or his own pride. We know that Beowulf and Roland will die. The authors make this very evident through foreshadowing.
