A Conflict of Values
In the Middle Ages there was a continual struggle between Christian and pagan beliefs. In the story Beowulf, the conflict between Christianity and paganism is evident. I will show how the Anglo-Saxons, who claimed to be Christian, were in many ways still firmly entrenched in their pagan faith.
An illustration of how quickly the Anglo-Saxons were willing to return to their pagan roots is shown when Grendel began to kill and torment Hrothgar's people. We read:
At times they offered sacrifices to the idols
in their pagan tabernacles, and prayed aloud
to the soul-slayer that he would assist them
