Beowulf

The heroic epic Beowulf, reflects in an alliterative poetic form the beliefs and way of life of the Anglo-Saxons of the eleventh century. In the narrative, Beowulf, having heard of the monster Grendel, sets out to slay the creature and gain glory for himself and his people. Beowulf triumphs over both Grendel and Grendel's outraged mother before returning to his homeland. Beowulf subsequently reigns peacefully over his people for fifty years before he dies defending his people from the vengeance of a rampaging dragon. Examining Beowulf's' death in the context of his life and the beliefs and way of life of the Anglo-Saxons, it is clear that Beowulf's death was not seen as tragic and was considered a noble end.
